Missing the home opener because I am sick, I watched every second of the Ernie Banks unveiling of his statue...Nice to see that not the cold wind, nor the rain, seemed to dampen a wonderful ceremony for one of baseball's true greats, Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks.
I watched as the cameras panned across fans, local politicians and passers-by, but nothing struck me as more awe inspiring as seeing Hank Aaron at Ernie's celebration. Knowing I grew up to only see highlights of both Aaron and Banks, they made me feel proud that the stories I saw on television, and the pure voice-cracking jubilation of Jack Brickhouse's call of Ernie's 500th, were just that....proud, awe-inspiring moments...If I had one wish, it would be to have been a child back in the days of Aaron, Mays, Banks...it all seemed so real back then, so innocent, so very touchable...
