Mark DeRosa, who was hospitalized over the weekend for an irregular heartbeat, may need surgery to get his heart back into rhythm. This is something that has persisted since DeRosa was sixteen. Despite occuring during games and other miscellanous activities, this is not considered life-threatening by any means.
Another option would be medication but that is not a route that the utility infielder/outfielder player wants to take.
The Cubs have not set a timetable for DeRosa's return and they plan on playing the waiting game while more tests are taken. Although, DeRosa hopes to return in a week.
This is a situation that could push the Cubs to make a move for Brian Roberts. The current Baltimore Oriole would slide into the second base position and this would alleviate any pressure on DeRosa to comeback to quickly. Expectations after DeRosa signed a three year deal last year were that he would play a multitude of positions. Acquiring Roberts would strengthen the bench as well as the depth at many positions with the versatility that DeRosa provides.
