Can the Cubs win a championship this year? And if so, what do they have to do? |
Chris Schumerth Aug 22, 08 | As a Cubs fan, my opinion is admittedly biased. However... The Cubs have a great chance to win the World Series this year, and not just because it's the 100-year aniversary. But Lou has build a masterpiece of a team. While there are really 5-6 teams that coould win it, the Cubs have ALL the pieces. They have a lineup 1-8 that is capable of hitting for average and most of them can hit for power (Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Edmonds, DeRosa, and Soto have all hit more than 15 HRs). When Zambrano is pitching, that's a 9-hole who's hitting well over .300 and can also leave the yard. They have pitching. Four quality starters in Big Z, Harden, Dempster who's having a career year, and Lilly. And Marquis has been certainly adequate in the #5 spot. They have a great bullpen with Neal Cotts having a comeback year, Jeff Samardzija establishing himself, Chad Gaudin, Sean Marshall in long relief who has also made solid starts for them, and Kerry Wood having a solid first year as closer (because his stuff is still nasty!). They have speed in Soriano, Theriot, and Fukedome. They are playing great defense and are pretty flexible there with great depth at several positions. Lou can throw DeRosa about anywhere and get production. Soriano seems to be the one defensive weakness and he can be replaced in late inninngs with a lead. Soto has been great behind the plate. They have capable bats from both sides off the bench with Mike Fontenot, Ronny Cedano, Henry Blanco, and Reed Johnson all hitting close to or above .300. Not to mention Micah Hoffpauir lingering down in Triple A having a great year and waiting his turn. While Daryle Ward hasn't had a great year, ask the Florida Marlins if he is still capable of cominng of the bench and getting a big hit. And should I even mention Zambrano? Enough said, the Cubs have what it takes. |
