All season long it’s been, “Go Cubs go! Go Cubs go! Hey Chicago Whadaya say? The Cubs are gonna win today!” Well the only sounds coming from Cubs fans the last two nights were expletives and choking down a sausage followed by an Old Style. The curse has reared its ugly head again which means it’s the same old story in the post-season at Wrigley. 8 straight playoff losses dating back to the Bartman disaster have left Wrigleyville hopeless.

So, Zambrano and Harden are down; commence to panicking, right? Not so fast.
Let’s think about this for a moment:
Getting to the Playoffs:
Yes, the Cubs have lost 5 straight, but what does the playoff picture look like? They’re still four and a half games ahead of Milwaukee and nine games in front of the Phillies for the Wild Card. It’s not like those two are taking advantage of the Cubs’ recent struggles, either. Milwaukee has lost four straight and the Phils have lost five of their last eight. The Cubs have the most wins in baseball and they only have 22 games to play. Pitching aside, the Cubs still have one of the most potent offenses in the National League, if not all of baseball. Even without Z and Harden, Dempster is pretty darn good and Lilly is no slouch either. Now, I’m not saying they’re a lock for the playoffs, but even if both Zambrano and Harden don’t throw another pitch in the regular season, I’m confident the Cubs have the tools to hold on.

What a day for Alfonso Soriano. He came up with a huge 3-run home run in the 7th inning with 2 on and 2 out to put the Cubs up 10 to 7 over the Astros. Soriano also had a single and a double to give him 4 RBI on the day. He touched home twice.

Tribune Co. is selling the Chicago Cubs franchise, along with Wrigley Field, and part of Comcast SportsNet. The Cubs, as well as Wrigley Field, would be the perfect investment for any billionaire; Cubs fans are not going to simply walk away from their favorite team no matter how long it takes for them to win the World Series. True Cubs fans are fans for life....they will continue to fill the seats every single year no matter the outcome of previous seasons. Call it stupid, some critics do, and I don't want to get into all of that right now, especially since I'm one of those "stupid" people that watches the Cubs every day. Anyway, all I'm saying is that Cubs fans are very loyal fans that will provide continually increasing revenue for the new owner.

It has been a while since my last post, which was bitter to say the least. A month and a half later I can hardly find much to complain about when it comes to the Cubs. They look like the best baseball team in the National League right now (obviously their record doesn't disagree), and after a 7-0 homestand this week, my baseball excitement is at its peak. I can't miss a Cubs game anymore. I make a point to try to watch or listen to every game, and I went to two games during the undefeated homestand. They have just been so entertaining to watch. Their play has been solid all around, and their offense has just been hilarious. Geovany Soto has been incredible, and he looks like he is going to be a legitimate NL all star catcher for years to come in the shadow of Mike Piazza.

Chicago Cubs ace pitcher, Carlos Zambrano did yesterday what every good and successful pitcher in the big leagues does at some point in the season. He went out there with subpar stuff and he battled and he scratched and he clawed his way thru a 130 pitch ( 2nd most in his career) performance throwing only 79 strikes, walking 4 and being constantly behind the hitters. He still found a way to limit the Dodgers to only one run on 4 hits over 8 grueling innings with men on base constantly.

I never liked the "Soriano Hop". I never thought it would actually cause him to hurt himself though. I am not a Soriano fan. He's an absolute offensive mammoth when he gets hot, but when he's not hot, he has very little value to this team. And he is a terrible leadoff hitter when he's cold. His on-base is .230. Let's face it: this is one of the worst contracts in baseball right now, second maybe only to Barry Zito.

Still no Brian Roberts, still no centerfielder acquisition. That's okay, because it still looks like at least one of those is going to happen before opening day. And Soriano has finally been nudged from the leadoff spot, thank god. It will be good to see him driving in runs this year. I don't really like him in the 2 spot though because he isn't going to advance any runners (unless they plan on stealing constantly, which may work because pitchers will avoid throwing him fastballs at all costs).

Finally, the baseball buzz is heating up here in Chicago. I hate the time between the end of football and the beginning of baseball. Especialy this year. I stopped watching Bulls game over a month ago, for obvious reasons- like their absolute suckage causing my eyes to bleed. And as for the Blackhawks and the NHL (RIP), I have been trying to get back into them this year, and the Hawks look like they have a good future ahead of them, but I'm still not to the point of being a raging hockey follower.
