Cubs

11 March 2009

Good ol' Canadian James Richard Harden showed us why the Cubs got him when he pitched 2 innings in Tuesday's Cactus League game against Seattle.

The cubs have been all tip-toe with Rich, limiting his throws since he's been taking trips to the DL for the past 3 seasons, and was on the stint when he was traded.

I am so excited to finally watch a Chicago Cubs game in Spring Training. So, I am gonna do my best to do up-to-the-minute highlgihts.

9:06 p.m.: Getting ready to start. White Sox John Danks is the starting pitcher. So Taguchi plaays right field for the Cubbies. Derrek Lee is off, Micah Houffpauir is at first. Seems sold out, which I think it is. Groovy.

If you are a true Cubs fan, you know who I am talking about. Mike Fontenot, a.k.a "Little Babe Ruth" (as Cubs Radio Announcer and Legend—Ron Santo—calls him), should and needs to be given the second base job in 2009.

However, as a loyal and lifelong Cubs fan, I thought I should point out that the Phils are the logical choice to root for in this World Series.

I have heard the stories all year long about the Rays, and sure they make a nice story and all, but as a

so fast.

Let’s think about this for a moment:

Getting to the Playoffs:

Yes, the Cubs have lost 5 straight, but what does the playoff picture look like?  They’re still four and a half games ahead of Milwaukee and nine games in front of the Phillies for the Wild Card.  It’s not like those two are taking advantage of the

Their team is struggling just as much as the Cubs right now. It could have been disastrous if Milwaukee would have gone on a winning streak this week as the Cubs were skidding against the Phillies and Astros. The

Team effort...the reason I love the Cubs.  They are a great group of athletes, but they are also a great group of friends. Every game it's obvious that the players like each other and all understand what they could accomplish this year. I don't see any one man show out there....I see a team. Theriot slapping balls up the middle and to right fields...Lee hitting sac flies...Harden hustling down the first base line for an infield single...Blanco with a clutch game-ending hit. The list goes on. Never before have I seen a

He came up with a huge 3-run home run in the 7th inning with 2 on and 2 out to put the Cubs up 10 to 7 over the Astros. Soriano also had a single and a double to give him 4 RBI on the day. He touched home twice.

(FYI -- All my times are Pacific Time)

4:02 p.m.

It's Monday, August 4th. The Cubs and Astros are about to face off. The wind is always something to pay attention to at Wrigley....and it looks like it is blowing at around 10-15 mph from right to left field, straight across. Sweet outfits and hair on many of the fans tonight. It's 70s night...

A month and a half later I can hardly find much to complain about when it comes to the Cubs. They look like the best baseball team in the National League right now (obviously their record doesn't disagree), and after a 7-0 homestand this week, my baseball excitement is at its peak. I can't miss a

Chicago Cubs ace pitcher, Carlos Zambrano did yesterday what every good and successful pitcher in the big leagues does at some point in the season.  He went out there with subpar stuff and he battled and he scratched and he clawed his way thru a 130 pitch ( 2nd most in his career) performance throwing only 79 strikes, walking 4 and being constantly behind the hitters. He still found a way to limit the Dodgers to only one run on 4 hits over 8 grueling innings with men on base constantly.

In the Chicago Cubs  game tonight, the first hitter of the game Alfonzo Soriano led off with a screaming shot into the right field corner that he would have easily made it to 2nd base standing. He had to slide in head first and it was obvious to this reporter that he was heavily favoring his left leg.  He stayed in the game but it was obvious that he was affected.  Later in the inning a deep fly to right field and Soriano remained at 2nd base.  He finally scored on a play that had right fielder Xavier Nady made the catch on a easy fly he would have been doubled off.

20 April 2008

This season's Cubs team has begun this 2008 campaign with a 11-6 record, already better than last year's 10-win April. As action gets underway today, the Cubs are a half-game out of first place behind the Cardinals. It will be interesting to see how long the Cardinals can make this start last. How long can Cub castoff Todd Wellemeyer pitch as well as he has or Braden Looper or some of the other Cards starters. If the Cards hang around through the All-Star break, I'm sure they will welcome the return of Chris Carpenter and Mark Mulder to their staff so it is imperative that the

ight now, second maybe only to Barry Zito.

I'm not saying having him go down is going to help the Cubs. He's still an all-star player, and like I said, when he gets hot, he gets blazing hot. But it's so damn frustrating watching him go up there, spitting 500 times, swinging at everything, spitting, refusing to look at pitches from the leadoff spot, more spitting. All I'm saying is whoever is put in the leadoff spot while he is out, whether that be Theriot or Reed Johnson, (Fukudome?) better step it the hell up and prove to Lou Piniella that he has a bonafide table setter to put at the top of the lineup, so he does't have to stick Soriano in there so he can strike out, hit solo home runs, and not steal bases. This is why Brian Roberts would be nice.

It would be nice if he were actually able to win some games in April this year and get the Cubs off to a hot start. And as for closer, it's nice to see Kerry Wood might be getting the role. I still think I would prefer Marmol to start off there, because I'm sure he's gonna be there after Woody hurts a shoulder or a back. But as a

arch begins today, I have a few things running through my mind that I need to get off my chest as a Cubs fan.

- Sam Zell doesn't need another $400 million. The man has enough money already, just sell the team and you will get the 400 mil you want from that. Wrigley Field should always be Wrigley Field and should never change. It would be like changing Fenway Park to Campbell's Chunky Chowder Stadium. Not happening, is it.

rping about this all winter long but as the season draws closer and closer by the hour and day, the Cubs need a leadoff hitter and a second baseman possibly. Here's my take on this, Soriano is not the answer at the top. He gets his fastballs and hits 30-40 homeruns a season but this team can't afford solo homeruns all year from him. Stick him fourth in this lineup and I think he would be just fine. Give me a lineup of Roberts, Fukudome, Lee, Soriano, Ramirez, Soto, Theriot and either Pie or Fuld and I think the

It would appear the Cubs are well on the their way to another NL Central title but that first series of the season against Milwaukee is critical right off the bat. If the Cubs can win 2 out of 3 or sweep that series, it could be a important step towards another title due to the fact that they may put some doubt into the Brewers' minds about their ability to beat the North Siders this year. For now though, I look forward to

Originally I didn't really want Roberts and was kind of wishing the Cubs would push for Bedard because he would totally dominate in the NL Central, but obviously that didn't happen. However, I want Roberts now. Not because I think DeRosa wouldn't be good as the everyday second baseman, but mainly so they would have a reason to get Soriano out of th leadoff spot. The leadoff homeruns are nice and everything, but he has no business being in that spot in the lineup, swinging at the first pitch. Plus, if anyone were to get injured in the infield, you have DeRosa there to fill in instead of Ronny Cedeno or whatever hodgepodge of mediocre infielders that the
