Geovany Soto

28 September 2008

the Chicago Cubs, save IF/OF Mark DeRosa, means more to the continued success of the Cubs as does C Geovany Soto. The guardian of the plate, and a force to be reckoned with in the middle of the order (and even in the bottom of the order, depending on how others in the line-up are hitting that day), Soto has done it all in this, his ROOKIE year.  The stats don't lie: .285/.364/.504, 23 HRs, 86 RBI, 141 hits, 35 doubles, 2 triples, and 62 BB.  As a Catcher.  A Rookie Catcher.  I don't know about you, but I can't remember a better all-around statistical season by a catcher in a very long time.

Bottom 1st Inning ---- Moehler just used his hand to write something in the dirt on the mound before his first pitch. I didn't know the game was at the beach.... Kaz Matsui also thinks it is playtime..... he just slipped and went to his knees on the dirt chasing a groundball... basehit for Fontenot. Boring inning for the Cubs... Fontenot is stranded on first.

e his base after ball four.

Seth McClung came in to pitch after Gagne and threw high and tight to Geovany Soto which sparked some disgust from the crowd at Miller Park which at that point was mostly made of Cubs fans.

Geovany Soto C – Chicago Cubs

Soto has shown that not only is he by far the best hitting Rookie Catcher since Mike Piazza, but a team leader as well. He catches for a club who has faced some adversity with the pitching staff, the arm troubles of ace Carlos Zambrano, the suddenly human Carlos Marmol, and the lefty without a command and a big league address, Rich Hill. But despite the strenuous measures that the Puerto Rican rookie has endured so far, his poise has kept him as a producer. He’s on pace for around 25 homers, 100 runs driven in and over 40 doubles. That is a stellar season for any catcher, not one of a 25 year old rookie.

Their play has been solid all around, and their offense has just been hilarious. Geovany Soto has been incredible, and he looks like he is going to be a legitimate NL all star catcher for years to come in the shadow of Mike Piazza.

e other events that happened in this week, the Cubs demolished the Brewers 19-5.  In this game Geovany Soto hit 2 home runs and had 6 RBI's.  Things were looking up for the Cubs as they entered game 3 of the series.  The Cubs had a 3-1 lead entering the ninth inning with Kerry Wood on the mound to seal the deal.  Earlier, Zambrano pitched a beautiful game and was helped by perfect innings from Carlos Marmol.  Soriano was also back in the line up after returning from the DL.  Even though Soriano went 0-4, the day was going to have a beautiful ending.  I think I spoke to soon.  The beautiful ending never came as the Cubs coughed up the lead and ended up losing 4-3.  It all started with Wood hitting the first batter in the ninth and then allowing the next batter get on base.  It was now men on first and second as Wood delievered the next pitch to the next batter.  A fly ball to left field which is playable and catchable for Soriano.  Soriano misjudges it and misses the ball.  A run comes across the board and pretty soon Cubs were down 4-3.  Frustration mounted over to the press conference as Pinella ripped a reporter who questioned him about leaving Soriano in the game and not have a defensive replacement.  It was one of the most frustrating lost the Cubs have had so far this season. I hope Lou can endear another misplay by Soriano.

If you are reading this title, your heart probably sank and it has shattered all the chances of the Cubs making it to the World Series.  Put away those tissues and turn that frown around because good old Zambrano is not hurt, but in perfect health.  But will he stay that way?  Below, I have posted my top ten predictions on what will happen during the Cubs season.  If any of these do happen you wish would not happen, please do no send me hate mail.  Enjoy!
