Reed Johnson

5 March 2009

I am so excited to finally watch a Chicago Cubs game in Spring Training. So, I am gonna do my best to do up-to-the-minute highlgihts.

9:06 p.m.: Getting ready to start. White Sox John Danks is the starting pitcher. So Taguchi plaays right field for the Cubbies. Derrek Lee is off, Micah Houffpauir is at first. Seems sold out, which I think it is. Groovy.

mes of the regular season.

Yet, along with many of the Cubs' season-long contributors, like Reed Johnson, Fontenot saw very limited action in the postseason. I just couldn't understand how you only start Fontenot once after ending the season like that, especially with all those righties, and keep Hoffpauir, who hit .390 in September, off the roster.  But I am still trying to forget this year actually happened.

Soriano can easily be lifted late in a game with a lead though, as the Cubs have Reed Johnson and Mark DeRosa who can both play solid outfield defense. In centerfield, Jim Edmonds has made a nice rebound in his career and his playing well on both sides and is one of the six Cubs starters with at least 15 HR's on a team that doesn't depend on the long ball. RF Fukedome got off to a great start, then really struggled (offensively at least), and now seems to have found it again at least to some degree after an adjustment Lou Piniella and he made.

strain, but he returned on Friday and was the dominant ace pitcher we remember from April and May. Reed Johnson saw a minimum 15-day DL stint with back spasms, but he is now 100 percent, and has gotten plenty of playing time in the four games since his activation. So as most of the battered Cubs have seen themselves get back on track, their leadoff man is still missing in action.

t handed bat like Hoffpauir.   Murton being right handed gives Lou the option of a Murton-Reed Johnson- Kosuke Fukudome outfield against lefties.   Lou could shuffle DeRosa to left and play Cedeno in the infield if he wants.  Hoffpauir is a given with the way he has swung the bat in the spring and in his short callup.

ost the Cubs around 289,000 prorated.  If he does start to pan out this is a cheap find.  Reed Johnson who is the right handed hitting part of the center field platoon was also a cheap pickup and has turned out to be one of the major pleasant surprises.  Given Soriano's lame legs and the nagging nature of his situation, having Edmonds around allows Lou to put

When Reed Johnson is in the lineup, he can bat leadoff.  Should they want to DL him, Matt Murton could be called back up.   Micah Hoffpauir could play in left vs righties or Lou

Earlier this afternoon, the Cubs signed former Blue Jay Reed Johnson to a one-year deal to back up Felix Pie in center field. A very interesting and needed signing for a team that needed a righ
