season.  This team lacks the testicular fortitude of champions.  Didn’t you expect Zambrano to pick a fight with Derrek Lee in the dugout?  He should have.  You have Fukudome swinging and missing and looking at his bat like a girlfriend that cheated on him.

So, Zambrano and Harden are down; commence to panicking, right?  Not so fast.

Let’s think about this for a moment:

Getting to the Playoffs:

Yes, the Cubs have lost 5 straight, but what does the playoff picture look like?  They’re still four and a half games ahead of Milwaukee and nine games in front of the Phillies for the Wild Card.  It’s not like those two are taking advantage of the Cubs’ recent struggles, either.  Milwaukee has lost four straight and the Phils have lost five of their last eight.  The Cubs have the most wins in baseball and they only have 22 games to play.  Pitching aside, the Cubs still have one of the most potent offenses in the National League, if not all of baseball.  Even without Z and Harden, Dempster is pretty darn good and Lilly is no slouch either.  Now, I’m not saying they’re a lock for the playoffs, but even if both

nnings most the time, and it seems anything past that is a bonus.

Carlos Zambrano had another wonderful game.  4 scoreless innings in total, along with three hits, including a triple, a sac bunt that went for a hit, and he picked off Villa Park native Jody Gerut.  Sorry Jody, that's what you get for homering off our guy at Wrigley with your first at bat from the minors.  Good luck to you though, when healthy you are a solid player.

Chicago Cubs ace pitcher, Carlos Zambrano did yesterday what every good and successful pitcher in the big leagues does at some point in the season.  He went out there with subpar stuff and he battled and he scratched and he clawed his way thru a 130 pitch ( 2nd most in his career) performance throwing only 79 strikes, walking 4 and being constantly behind the hitters. He still found a way to limit the Dodgers to only one run on 4 hits over 8 grueling innings with men on base constantly.

or the Chicago Cubs Friday night not only did they get that type of stellar performance from Carlos Zambrano on the mound, for good measure he added 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate driving in as many runs (2) as he allowed.   The Cubs cruised to a 12-3 victory over their favorite team to play this season, the Pittsburgh Pirates who they have defeated in 9 of the first 10 meetings.   Pirate starting pitcher, Zach Duke is already 0-4 vs the Cubs in 2008.
